Exodus for Lent: Week 1, Monday

Read: Exodus 1:15-22; Proverbs 11:17-18; Isaiah 3:10-11

Reflect: We are right to fear God. Shiphrah and Puah fear God more than they fear Pharoah, and God rewards them. Throughout scripture, God rewards the righteous and punishes the wicked. Think of a time in your life when you did the right thing—perhaps when it was scary or difficult. Have you seen God at work in your life as a result? How were you rewarded? Was the reward tangible or spiritual or both?

Write: (on your own or in the comments here)

Recite the Week's Verse: Isaiah 41:13   For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear; I will help you.”

Pray: Gracious Lord, Help me grow in courage and faith so that my fear does not stop me from doing what is right in your eyes. Amen.

  1. Seven years ago, George sought a new military assignment and was given orders to his dream job, but he didn't feel right about it for some reason, and I--good little military wife I was--got ready to move, trying to put a good face on but oddly reluctant at the same time. Our uneasiness with the move grew, and then the developmental pediatrician told us that Jack probably had autism and that it would be better not to take him to the new state (Texas) which had a bad reputation for not helping families affected by autism. Neither George nor I hesitated to cancel the orders, and we both felt a deep relief of the anxiety we'd had since the orders first had come through.

Letting go of the move was easy in a lot of ways because it just felt like the right thing to do on every level, but in other ways it was so very difficult, especially for George, stuck as he was in a job he hated. Not once, though, have we questioned whether we did the right thing, and God has showed us time and again over the past seven years that we did what He wanted us to do. Blessings have abounded in Jack's life...and in ours. Has it always been easy? NO!!! But worth it? PRAISE GOD, YES!!!

  2. Thank you Susan, this is such a powerful lesson!
Thanks also for sharing your personal experience.
I work for my brother's company, and it has happened many times that there isn't enough money in the bank just before salary time. He has always believed and I also do that there will be enough to pay everyone. It is stressful sometimes, but God has never failed. This is often difficult to explain to other people.
We need to do our bit with faith in God, not fear of circumstances.
Looking forward to the rest of the teachings

  3. Rene, it is indeed amazing how God comes through and the things we worry about end up being times for trust and faith, not fear!
